A substantial extension to this modern college (Powell & Moya, 1974) incorporating an auditorium, porters’ lodge, library, and other facilities (Berman Guedes Stretton, 2013/16)
Built in two phases, this project began with the auditorium building, which includes a new porters’ lodge, seminar rooms, fellows’ offices and a café (2013). Phase II comprises the Academic Wing, providing additional library space, offices, and a social hub (2016). The architects have worked with the design language of the original Powell and Moya buildings, using a very similar palette of materials, building elements and forms, without directly reproducing them. This can be seen in the use of white render, bush-hammered concrete and slender round columns, and it has been very effective in maintaining a harmonious style.
Awards: Oxford Preservation Trust Award, 2014 (Auditorium) and 2016 (Academic Wing); RIBA South Region Award 2016 (Academic Wing)
