St Hugh’s College – Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre Building

A building to house the University of Oxford China Centre, with residential accommodation for graduate and undergraduate students (David Morley Architects, 2014)

This building forms a pair with the earlier Maplethorpe Building (David Morley, 2001), in the same style and materials, principally grey steel framing with panels of brick-coloured cladding. The China Centre is arranged around a courtyard and oriental garden, with student accommodation occupying the main block, flanked by the two wings of the research centre. The brick colour reflects the predominance of red brick on the college site, where the main buildings date from 1914-16 (Buckland & Haywood), with later additions, and 1964-6 (Kenyon and Wolfson Buildings, both by David Wyn Roberts).
